Upcomings and updates

I’m quite literally jumping up and down with the upcoming author events that I’ll be attending in the next few weeks that I had to tell you about them before they happen. Of course then you’ll have to bear with me when I post about them after with a photo or two as evidence or for bragging rights. Heaven help me.

So later this week I’ll catch some of the annual scifi and fantasy writing symposium called LTUE (Life, the Universe, and Everything). Besides the Utah-based authors who will be participating, the guest of honor will be none other than Megan Whalen Turner (!), an author I never imagined coming to my state. I think I’m still in shock that one of my favorite authors and one of the most masterful YA fantasy writers is not only coming to my state, but my town, AND I have the chance to meet her. Hear her speak, snap a picture, and watch her sign one of her books. Sigh. Yep, definitely still in shock.

Next week I’ll be heading up to the lovely The King’s English bookshop to see Tahereh Mafi, author of the YA dystopians Shatter Me and Unravel Me. I’m crossing my fingers that she’ll be wearing these incredible wedges covered in shattered mirror pieces that she added herself.

In other news, I’ve decided to apply for the online MLIS program at Drexel University. (Many thanks to Alyssa and Heidi for the recommendation.) I know other bloggers who are bona fide librarians by day … so, has anyone else enrolled in Drexel or another MLS/MLIS online program? What did you think of the program or what is your advice to me? The application isn’t due for another two weeks and then I won’t find out if I’ve been accepted for another two, but I’ll keep you informed. I’m hopeful that I won’t find it necessary to take a complete blogging hiatus once the quarter starts, just cut back on my reading and posting, but we’ll see. It’s all for a good cause, right?

I can’t even comment on the excessive jealous feelings I’m having over MWT visiting :( However, I did get my online MLIS from Drexel and I really enjoyed it! I work better in online than classroom settings, though, so that helped. The instructors I had were all very good and very dedicated to helping the students. I’m not sure I have advice (I graduation about 6 years ago, which means I remember nothing). Good luck! Feel free to ask any questions and I’ll do my best to remember :)

Lol, sorry. You did? I’ve never tried it but I think that online will suit me better than online. I was never one to always feel comfortable asking questions or contributing to discussions in the classroom. Oh Melissa, I would love that! Expect an email from me sometime. I’ll try not to bombard you ;)

I’m so excited for you getting your MLIS! I hope that it’ll help you to get a full time job/higher up position at a library there, and that you love it. I really enjoyed the program, in fact, my Resources for Young Adults class is part of what got me started reading YA. :) Also my JAW LITERALLY DROPPED when you said you get to see MWT. I’m so incredibly excited for you, please please please post about it after you go!

Wow! MWT! So very, very cool! Take lots of good notes for us poor, unfortunate souls Holly.

Also, a MLS/MLIS? You are a brave gal with the little ones still at home. I didn’t know you were thinking about changing. Are you hoping to go full time at the library? Best of Luck!

I started out at Drexel for my MLIS– but for financial reasons, had to transfer after one semester to a school that cost $300 less per credit–$900 less per class. I went to SCSU, southern connecticut state university, online. The classes ranged from not so great to very well done, and the biggest problem was there didn’t seem to be enough support staff to help with the large number of online students– ie, the professors and classes were fine, but I had trouble whenever something went wrong with financial aid or scheduling or arranging graduation or transferring credits. There was only one secretary for the entire Library Science department.

Good luck with your degree. My best advice: make sure you get some library experience before you graduate– there seem to be many more librarians out there than jobs available!

Drexel does seem a little on the pricey side. Good to know. I’ve had some library experience already. I’ve worked as as assistant librarian for the past 6 years. I would love to get more experience – hopefully the degree will open some doors for me. I was afraid of their being less jobs than librarians. I’m crossing my fingers that I’ll be able to find a job after I graduate, if not before.
