Happy Valentine’s Day! I think I’ll use this day to come out of the closet as a cake pop addict. Not that I want to but I may need to add another blog to my life called Holly’s Other Hobbies or something for all my baking/sewing projects.
Onto more bookish topics, this year I’m quickly becoming a big fan of read alongs. After doing my first last November, I’ve done four total read alongs so far. My newest is the Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell read along hosted at Iris on Books. A whopping 1024 pages in the hardback, I’ve understandably avoided it for years despite the wonderful things I’ve heard about this 19th century British tome about magicians. Best of all, it’s not too late to sign up! Iris has set a timetable for reading each volume. The deadline for the first volume is February 22. That gives you a whole week to read it if anyone’s interested. I’m so excited to finally be reading this book.
I also wanted to spread the word about the North and South Celebration over at Melanie’s Musings, which started yesterday and runs through February 24. I was thrilled when I happened to come across Melanie’s blog for the first time on the day she’d announced the feature. If you’re a fan of the book and/or mini-series it’s not to be missed. (And there’s a giveaway!) John Thornton aka Richard Armitage FTW!
And lastly, Happy Book Birthday to Scarlet by AC Gaughen! I just finished this YA Robin Hood retelling over the weekend and surprisingly it’s quite an appropriate read for Valentine’s Day. You know, if you like thievery and knifes and a little blood and pain with your romance. Review to follow.

Three of my favorite things in one post! I hope you love JONATHAN STRANGE & MR. NORRELL too. It is so different, yet quirky, yet totally awesome. Plus…Footnotes! Yipee.
Also, very happy you got to read SCARLET. Oh how I loved that one.
Happy Valentines Day!
Yay! Glad I could oblige. Crossing my fingers that I’ll love it.
As a matter of fact, that’s exactly how I take my romance.
Lol, knew there were a bunch of us who did.
LOL at you coming out as a cake pop addict. Did you see the pie pops that karen found in some cookbook? When those pics came through my goodreads feed, I was practically salivating. I tried to read Jonathan Strange once but it is so.long. Good luck in your readalong!
And I really want to read Scarlet! Looking forward to your review.
Thanks for the luck. The read along schedule is the only way I think I could’ve read it. 2-3 weeks per volume is just right. As a matter of fact, I am dying to try making other -pops – I’m not much of a pie person but cheesecake and brownies? I’m so there.
LOL looks like you’re becoming a cake pop expert! Those are pretty cute and perfect for Valentine’s. I’ve had my copy of Jonathan Strange since 2007 but I still haven’t gotten around to reading it. I think I’ve been avoiding it because of its length. Yay for a North and South celebration, will check that out.
Happy Valentine’s Day, Holly.
Well…you should join the read along then! Or if it’s not the right time, I understand.
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is one of my all time favorite stories. It’s a most remarkable read and I hope you fall in love with it as much as I did!
Oh really? I hope that I do.
Thanks for the heads up on North and South! I loved this mini-series (alas, I haven’t read the book), and am now happily enjoying the posts regarding it. Also I cannot wait to read Scarlet. At this point it’s finally out and my looming to read pile is forcing delayed gratification…
Oh drat Heidi! What bad luck.
I have read North and South and while I enjoyed it, the mini-series is better IMO. The main reason is the producers favorably altered the ending from the book.
