The Demon’s Surrender UK Cover

It’s way too early for a Saturday morning where I live, but since I’m up I couldn’t resist sharing the UK cover for The Demon’s Surrender, which Sarah Rees Brennan just released on her LJ:

For those of you who don’t know *gasp* The Demon’s Surrender is the third and concluding book in the excellent The Demon’s Lexicon series, and anyone who’s been around here recently knows that I quickly became a die hard fan when I read the first two books earlier this year. The designs for the UK covers have been my favorites but with this final book I’m sort of torn between the US and the UK covers. The US cover was released last year and features Alan on the front.

I’ve been up front about my love for Alan, so that’s definitely working in the US cover’s favor. He even has his bow and arrow. *adore* I also miss having a graphic portrait, which is one of my favorite aspects of the previous two UK covers featuring Nick and Mae. On the other hand while I’m not usually a fan of the recent photo over art trend for YA covers (since I think it dates a cover very quickly) I think this one of Sin is an exception. It looks like the Sin I already know and love from the first two books, which is always a good thing. The gritty, broken type face of the UK cover wins hands down. I also love the specificity of the background of the UK cover better than the vague rocky terrain of the US cover. Knowing the flames on the water forebodes an actual scene from the book gives me excited shudders. Likewise the buildings look like actual buildings you’d find along the Thames in London. So *drumroll*…

Final verdict: the UK set is still definitely the one to own. I’ll just have to have both editions of The Demon’s Surrender so I can have my Alan fix. ;)

What do you think of the UK cover and which is your favorite? June couldn’t come faster.

the UK cover is SO much better! (sorry US) :D

Sadly the photo on this one ruins it for me. That was my favorite aspect of the UK covers–the art. And I completely understand her publisher saying they may have made them look like they were targeted for a younger audience. But still…I loved them so. The photo just doesn’t do it for me at all (not how I see Sin). So I’m going US with this one. I love my Alan, too. And I love him having his own cover for the last book.

    Can’t wait!

Oh this is surprising! I wonder why they went with a model for the third cover instead of art like before? I’m with Angie on this one, I loved the artwork in the previous two UK covers and it would’ve been great if they made the third cover match those. I’ll be getting the US edition because I have the US hardcovers for the first two.

Holly, you should do more cover posts. I think you did an awesome job of analyzing these two covers. :)

I know! I guess the thought was the art made the other covers look juvenile? It is sad.

Oh thanks! I enjoyed it. Maybe I will. Call it something like Cover Talk.

I saw this the other day and was just incredibly sad that they had moved away from the previous UK graphic style. I specifically ordered UK copies of the first two cause I can’t stand the US ones, but this one isn’t really doing anything for me this go round. Dang publishers! I wish they wouldn’t mess up a good thing.

Another person here who agrees with angie, I adored the art of the UK ones. that said, I feel bad because I’m not head-over-heels for any of the covers of this series! Though i loove the books :P I think I’m in the same boat as you, Books 1+2 = UK, book 3 = US :)

Good call! Now that I’ve had more time to think about it I think I was being generous that night. I really don’t like the photo of Sinin this cover. The depiction of her on the US cover of Covenant is much closer to how I imagined her from the beginning. It really is a shame they went away from using art.
