Today the Book Blogger Appreciation Week topic is to share a book or genre you tried due to the influence of another blogger. This was not a hard question for me to answer. Hands down the genre would be urban fantasy, which seemed so far out of my league at the time. I can’t nail it down to just one blogger either. It was a combination of Goodreads friends and the glowing recommendations of several bloggers that kept on piling up in my mind until I finally caved in.
The series that I tried first was the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs that begins with the wonderfully-werewolf ridden Moon Called:
Yeah, these covers were definitely a turn off. Was that kind of tatted-out, butt-kicking, tough chick going to be for me – not to mention her being scantily clad? Would generally conservative, gentle me like reading all that gruesome action? After initially feeling a little lost in the worldbuilding and politics. (I mean, I didn’t even know what fae meant.) I felt right at home with all the werewolf, vampire, and fae goodies and baddies and fell in love with super cool mechanic Mercy. We’re different but the same and I wanted to have a friend like that in real life. I’ve read a few other UF series I’ve enjoyed even more but it all started with Mercy. More than happy I gave you a chance.
Here are the different covers for the rest of the series:

Blood Bound – my review
Iron Kissed – my review
Bone Crossed – my review
Silver Borne – my review
River Marked (Spring 2011)

I haven’t tried urban fantasy yet but I’ve seen this series around.
Oh and aren’t you glad you did? I love Mercy. I love Adam. I love Patricia Briggs’ world-building for this series. Such good stuff.
Chrisbookarama, it’s definitely a good place to start.
Michelle, so glad. I agree.
Big smiles on my face today to see you feature Mercy here and Chachic feature Kate over at her place. My top two UF series. They deserve all the love they get!
i absolutely LOVE this series with total abandom, may just be my all time favourite UF series.
Carla It’s pretty close to my favorite, but I just love the Kate Daniels series too much.
I really enjoyed Moon Called and I have the next one on my shelf, ready to be read, but I admit that I like Kate Daniels slightly better, I simply love Kate and Curran together
