That’s it. No more denial. I’m ready to admit that I’m in a terrible reading slump, which would explain my lack of posts lately. I thought it was just the book I’m currently reading or my freetime-consuming weekend in the country. I’ve also been preoccupied lately with life in general. Decisions I need to make. Inexhaustible self-informing that I need to do. So I’ve read a couple of non-fiction books, but I haven’t finished a fun book in about two weeks now. The book will remain unnamed but I’m more than 100 pages in, and I don’t really care. I’ve trudged on longer than usual because I haven’t had the heart to give up on it. So many people adore it. But alas I think it’s time.
This is where you come in. I guess my TBR list is not long enough because nothing on it is appealing. Anyone have any engaging, interesting, reluctant reader books they can recommend to pull me out of it?

Yuck. Yuck, yuck, yuck. I hate reading slumps. I’m sorry you’re languishing in one right now. And I’m hesitant to recommend something because the one you’re slumping on right now is probably something I pushed on you.
But, being me, I’ll go ahead and say you might give MY HEARTBEAT a try, by Garrett Freymann-Weyr. It’s short, sweet, and sort of objectively beautifully written. You’re welcome to drop in and borrow it as I’ve got that copy of MATCHED here for you, too.
You could always re-read something you’ve loved. That usually gets me excited about reading again. But, you might try THE FOREST OF HANDS AND TEETH, PRINCESS OF THE MIDNIGHT BALL, DEALING WITH DRAGONS (an oldie but goodie), and THE GRAVEYARD BOOK.
Okay, so I seriously spent like half an hour looking at your goodreads shelves. I’m afraid that we are so evenly matched that you’ve read pretty much every book I’ve ever read. LOL!
Usually what I end up doing is completely switching genres from the one I’m reading and that helps a lot. Like read some YA after reading a lot of fantasy. In your case you sound so preoccupied I’d recommend a contemporary romance – something funny and light? Anything you had your eye on – like have you read the latest Julie James? Um.. I am not sure what you’ve already read.. must add you on goodreads and think about it.
Angie, thanks for the sympathy.
And don’t worry, the book I’m slumping on is something that you and many of book blogger friends really like, but one I chose to read at this time of my own volition.
So be guiltfree! …As for MATCHED, I wouldn’t want to take it before you had read/reviewed it. Never heard of MY HEARTBEAT. I will definitely check it out. Short and sweet sounds good. Thanks!
Emily, that’s a good idea. Those all sound great, actually. I’ve had THE GRAVEYARD BOOK on my TBR list as well. That’s funny that our Goodreads shelves match so well! I’ll have to go see that for myself!
Janicu – thanks for stopping by! I need it. The genre-changing advice is excellent. I absolutely loved the Julie James books. I’m not interested in reading her newest one since I heard it’s a little different, but I may go back to Jennifer Crusie. I very non-committedly started BET ME a few weeks back but had to return it to the library. I think I may need just the right entertaining, easy-to-read YA. Thanks for the Goodreads add! I’ve been to your blog a few times.
Must come out of the lurker shadows and comment.
I think you’ll like BET ME if you liked the first two Julie James’. Yeah the third Julie James is more of a romantic suspense than a romantic comedy like the first two, so it is sort of different.
Gah. I hate, detest and loathe reading slumps.
When I was feeling slumpy earlier this year, I tried out some Jennifer Cruise books and made myself verra happy indeed. Fluffy and very fun. I’d start with BET ME, WELCOME TO TEMPTATION or FAKING IT. All so much fun.
Michelle, thanks for the Crusie recs. I wasn’t sure which other titles were good besides BET ME.
Janicu – I also heard that Something About You’s sex scenes left less to the imagination, which doesn’t thrill me. I’ll definitely go out and get BET ME.
Boo reading slumps! They happen to everyone. I agree with Janicu on the switching genres idea. I do that as well, I read YA in between fantasy and vice versa. I echo Michelle’s recommendation of Bet Me because I loved that one. Julie James and Jennifer Crusie are my favorite contemporary romance authors. For YA, I recommend Going Too Far, which is one of my favorites. I checked in Goodreads and it seems like you haven’t read it? For YA fantasy, have you read Crown Duel? I’m a huge Sherwood Smith fan and I suggest you give her a try if you haven’t read Crown Duel.
Hi Chachic, those are great recs. I actually have Crown Duel right now, so maybe I’ll be trying it soon. I’ve also thought about reading Going Too Far in the past. Maybe I will now. Thanks!
